The institute was established in 1925 and was officially registered in 1929 as the Transcaucasian Water Research Institute. The main direction of the research was the implementation of scientific-research works in the field of water management, environment protection and land reclamation. Due to the state strategic priority of the country, it is still working on the following main scientific directions: • Water safety and integrated management by consideration of climate change; • Predicting and controlling natural disasters; • Research on modern land reclamation problems; • Prediction of sea and reservoir problems; • Reliability and risk of hydraulic structures; • Study of erosion processes of agricultural lands.
In 2020-2025, the institute is developing the topic of program funding "Security of water resources and integrated management by consideration of climate change." The research is carried out both in the hydraulic laboratory of the institute and in natural landscapes.
Currently, the goal and mission of the institute is: - Development of calculation methods for natural disasters (floods, flash floods, landslides, landslides, snow avalanches and erosion processes) and design of engineering structures against them; - Development of new wave-damaging constructions for innovative coastal and reservoir-sensitive coastal innovative structures; - Estimating and forecasting the amount of sediment on the bottom of reservoirs and abrasive shores recycling with respect to climate change; -Development of hydrotechnical and bioengineering innovative measures against slope erosion using local raw materials; - Development of educational-scientific and educational methodological literature in the direction of hydromelioration and raising of professional education; - Development of water and soil natural resources cadastre for integrated natural resources management; - Development of international and national grant projects aimed at environmental safety, mitigation of natural disasters and enhancing environmental education of the population; - Preparation of national, EU and NATO grant projects with the involvement of young scientists; - Preparation of vocational education and advanced training programs in the field of agricultural reclamation; - Preparation of scientific-educational and normative documentation for the design of environmental structures for the mountain landscapes and safety of the population of Georgia; - Establish international relations in the preparation and implementation of exchange programs for young scientists and international grant projects; - Preparation and commercialization of grant and business support projects on the research bases of the Institute with the involvement of young scientists; The Institute has been publishing collections of scientific works every year since 1934; And the annual international scientific-technical conference established and organized by the institute since 2011. Lebs that have ISSN and DOI.
