We show that the Schur multiplier of a Noetherian group need not be finitely generated. We prove that the non-abelian tensor product of a polycyclic (resp. polycyclic-by-finite) group and a Noetherian group is a polycyclic (resp. polycyclic-by-finite) group. We also prove new versions of Schur's theorem.

Let   gn = [x1, . . . , xn] be the nth lower central word. Denote by Xn the set of gn-values in a group G and suppose that there is a number m such that |gXn| ≤ m for each g ∈ G. We prove that gn+1(G) has finite (m, n)-bounded order. This generalizes the much celebrated theorem of B. H. Neumann that says that the commutator subgroup of a BFC-group is finite.

Schur’s theoremand its generalisation, Baer’s theorem, are distinguished results in group theory, connecting the upper central quotients with the lower central series. The aim of this paper is to generalise these results in two different directions, using novel methods related with the non-abelian tensor product. In particular, we prove a version of Schur–Baer theorem for finitely generated groups.
